Levels Courses: Earn Your Certification in Orff Schulwerk
Orff Schulwerk Certification offers the opportunity for professional growth through a comprehensive program in one of the leading philosophies of active music education including music and movement skills, theory, and pedagogy for grades K-8. Certification in Orff Schulwerk is widely recognized as a significant professional step in both the public and private school sector as Orff Schulwerk often forms the foundation of a music curriculum. Learning to create original teaching materials that have meaning for your students and developing supportive connections with colleagues and instructors are only two of the important benefits of participation in the program. The courses also help prepare teachers and therapists for the challenge of developing music programs adapted to the needs of their students. Levels I – III are offered, and certification is awarded upon successful completion of LEVEL III – you can sign up for one course per summer.
Level I - This course is recommended for those with no previous Orff-Schulwerk training and will include:
Level III - Explores polymeters and functional harmony to include I-V, I-IV, and I-IV-V accompaniment settings. Forms include theme and variations, chaconne & passacaglia, decoration of the third, and ground bass. In pedagogy, students apply the Orff process to conceptual teaching. All recorder voicing are explored in a variety of combinations.
Masterclass - Advanced pedagogy based on Orff-Schulwerk principles, designed to train workshop clinicians; includes orchestration techniques, ontogenetic treatment of rhythm and melody, movement improvisation, and recorder playing. The is a one week course. This year's Masterclass's is titled Elemental Explorations. The course explores the cohesion of elemental movement and music and the philosophical underpinnings of the Schulwerk. The participants will study the historical foundations of the Schulwerk and explore creating elemental music throughout the week. The primary focus of this
masterclass is to free ourselves of the pre-written compositions and create new starting points inspired by a myriad of sources: movement, poetry, artifacts, etc. The participants with create pieces organically with peers, the week is very collaborative, and movement is embedded throughout each day. Beyond classroom pedagogy, this masterclass focuses on creating as teacher-artists through the extended development of elemental material.
Introduction to Orff Schulwerk - The course is for those who are wanting to know more about the Schulwerk, but are not ready complete Level I. This a one week course.

- Studying Level I music curriculum concepts in time, rhythm, meter, melody, accompaniment texture, timbre, elemental forms, expression, and pedagogy
- Experiencing learning objectives through speech, body percussion, unpitched percussion instruments, singing, playing pitched instruments, playing recorder, movement, orchestration, and composition
